Making Inertia Work for You

Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight ahead, except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by forces impressed. [Cohen & Whitman 1999 translation]

I fight inertia. Everyday. Whether it’s going to the gym. Or eating my fruits or veggies instead of that cheesecake that’s beckoning. Or even drinking herbal tea instead of my favorite chocolate mocha topped with whipped cream. Last night vegged out in front of the idiot box, I wondered how I might harness inertia to my advantage.

Here are my Top 5 Ways to Make Inertial Work For Me

1. Everybody is talking about lists these days. Making lists seems a good way to harness inertia in front of the T.V. Take your pick – online lists such 37 Signals’ Ta-Da lists, Remember the Milk or Zoho Planner on your laptop, or just plain paper lists.

2. Folding freshly laundered clothes

3. Cleaning my handbag

4. Paying bills online

5. And here is the best one of all: running on my treadmill while watching T.V.
